Its no secret that we were impressed by the Behringer X-32 range of mixers - see our review. But since then, the trend has built for smaller, stagebox style mixers, where all you get is a box of connectivity with a stack of DSP inside.

Control is the name of the game, certainly if you want the power without the expense, do away with all those meters, faders and knobs and there's a big saving to be had.

The Behringer X-AIR XR18 is the top of the X-AIR range with 18 inputs, and 8 physical outputs. It also has a built-in, class compliant, USB audio interface (18 io). This makes it a deal more flexible than the XR16 and XR12 which only have a USB port for recording stereo files directly to disc - neat but ultimately less useful for some applications.

We put the Behringer X-AIR XR18 to the test.

Available now: £699/$1049/€949. (full list prices)
