Young bands of the future will insist on releasing music in the Compact Disc Format, saying that 44.1khz/16 bit sounds "better" than losslessly compressed hi-res digital downloads.

"You can really hear the laser on that foil layer," they'll say, "and that 4.75-square-inch printed artwork has that real CMYK vibe that no hi-def JPEG ever could."

Perhaps not. No love for those devalued silver discs, even though the shape and concept lives on in Blu-ray.

It is good to see physical media continue - it's one of the few consumer products that largely does not end up in landfills.

Whereas dead MP3 players are currently leaking mercury in landfills from your town to China.

Sammy - I did not see CD sales broken out individually in Nielsen's sales info.

Total album sales, though, which includes CDs, are down by about 13%.

it's great to see that vinyl is getting its place back...hadn't the cd ever been popularized the record companies wouldn't be facing the difficulties they are now. The one record companies wanted to kill is the one that's gonna save them. Ironic, isn't it? VINYL RUUULLLEEEEZZZZZZZZ

approx 300 million US CD sales in 2009. Approx 75 million downloads. Vinyl is irrelevant.
