Are you sure you wanted to join Depeche Mode?

Enjoyable story, and I can relate to the need to suppress synth-based gear lust. Once you get past the incorrect notion that synthesizers are meant to mimic other instruments and embrace the idea that they are unique instruments in their own right, that's when the desire takes over and you want one of everything going.

Really? Yes and ELP and Pink Floyd and Genesis had no impact at all on a garage band in the early '80s? Not even to evoke a 'they're cool' or 'they stink'? Wow. Islands in the stream, I suppose.

Hi Gridsleep, yes, I know, I was younger then and blinkered... which I suppose was partly the point of my story. Hi T. Zimmerman, glad you enjoyed reading it... GAS is a constant battle for me too, seriously something I need to keep a lid on. Hi Philippa, thanks for commenting, I don't suppose they would have wanted me, but yes, I would, especially in the early days... ah well...

I never joined The Beatles for a similar reason. They never asked.

I dont think Depeche Mode would have been impressed enough with my VL-Tone, E&MM Syntom, & Tandy Echo Unit to let me join;)

I suspect in back in those days, if you had any kind of decent synth, you would have been considered.

My SH-09 might have got me an audition. I fear I might well have been let down by a lack of talent.
