Golly, this is certainly a show for revelations and Korg certainly haven't disappointed. Not only do we get the new valve equipped Electribe MX but they also tell us that they are entering the software arena with the release of their new Legacy Collection. Utilizing what Korg call Component Modeling Technology (CMT), Korgs software boffins have modeled the individual electronic components - resistors, capacitors - that sort of thing, used in the original circuitry of their classics. This same approach has been used very effectively by GForce in their Oddity (see review). This is a major new area for Korg and lets face it - they have a lot of classics to re-model, and who better than the original creators? I'm sure there will be no shortage of fans of the originals to help them get it just right. We spoke to James, their hottest demo guy (see upcoming Electribe MX video) and also a real analogue buff - "I heard the MS20 emulation recently, tried a couple of my favourite settings, and then sold my MS20 - I won't be needing it anymore." Endorsement indeed. The MS20 has always been much in demand due to it's screaming filters and semi-modular patchability - apparently this will all be there - including the ability to process external signals, something the MS20 is great for. We wondered if there could be an aging parameter to simulate the crankiness that comes with age in these machines adding to the overall character - we'll have to wait and see as the release is not expected until Q3 2003. Also planned for release in the first batch of the Legacy Collection are the Korg PolySix - the 80s six voice polysynth and the Korg Wavestation - "The most requested model by a long way" according to Alan Scally, Korg's UK marketing manager. Korg were remaining tight lipped about any exact details with no screenshots or pricing info available at this time. There is a short video presentation with the soundtrack composed on these instruments (and others) available at:
