You we’re always searching for the do-it-all studio solution that we can use in conjuntion with the our beloved DAWs. Maybe we are somewhat closer to that goal with the new Presonus FIREPOD™, a complete 24bit-96k recording studio including eight high-quality PreSonus microphone preamplifiers and Steinberg’s Cubase SE 48-track, 24-bit/96K recording software, Compatible with Windows XP and Mac OS X, the FIREPOD is the only complete FireWire recording studio to offer this kind of package for under $700. Rick Naqvi, director of sales and marketing for PreSonus Audio, is excited about the value that the new interface brings to the audio market. “We looked at other computer-based recording systems in this price range and thought there was room for improvement,” states Naqvi. “We’re offering eight Class-A PreSonus mic pre’s, S/PDIF and MIDI inputs and outputs, as well as rock-solid Cubase SE recording software. Right out of the box the FIREPOD will be ready to record and produce music.” Naqvi continues, “The 1U high FIREPOD will be great for mobile recording as well. The FIREPOD is equipped with a second FireWire port to enable a customer to add additional FIREPODs for more inputs or other FireWire devices to customize the system.” PreSonus president, Jim Odom, states, “With most computer-based recording interfaces under $1,000, you have to buy additional mic preamps or software, which ends up adding to the overall price. The FIREPOD will be a complete professional computer-based recording studio with hardware and software at a great price.” The FIREPOD will ship with Steinberg’s Cubase SE 48-track 24-bit/96K recording software, and is also compatible with both ASIO- and WDM-based applications including Cubase SX, Nuendo, Deck, Peak and Logic software. The additional FireWire port makes it possible to daisy chain multiple FIREPODs together, creating the possibility of additional audio channels at 24-bit/96k. The interface features a headphone output on the front panel, as well as a mix knob to balance monitoring levels between mixed input and main output signals, which equates to zero-latency monitoring. A level potentiometer on the front panel controls the input level of each preamplifier. Inputs one and two of the FIREPOD can switch between Microphone and Instrument level, while inputs three through eight can switch between Microphone and Line input. Phantom power (+48V) is available on every channel (in groups of four) and dual input Neutrik connectors are used for all eight inputs. The FIREPOD is also equipped with eight balanced TRS line outputs, as well two balanced TRS main outputs, two channels of SPDIF input and output and MIDI input and output.
