You may have already come across the Fireface UFX from RME, but for those who haven't, it's an extremely high-spec audio interface, offering up to 30 channels of inputs and outputs, and the neat thing is it operates over either USB or Firewire.

RME devices often seem to offer quite unique capabilities, and this one is no exception - when it was introduced recently, there was talk of a USB recording option becoming available, and the big news from RME at the MusikMesse 2011 is that this has now been released.

Basically, you can now plug a USB stick into the Fireface USX and record up to 60 channels(!)
Obviously a fast USB stick is a good idea a a slow one will limit the number of channels you can record, but if you use a 2.5" USB hard-drive, for example, you should have no problem recording the maximum number of channels.

Pretty impressive stuff.

So you don't even need a computer now to record a live performance, for example - a computer screen would offer a more convenient way to set-up and monitor, for sure, but there's even a colour display on the Fireface, so in theory you could set up everything directly from the unit itself.

We asked Matthias Carstens to give us a run through.
