There is a special corner of the NAMM show where a collection of analog machines, skweek and burble. Amongst them I spotted the Buchla 200E Modular System. The Buchla modular system has been held in high esteem since it was first manufactured in 1970. In the mid 80’s it was discontinued due to the rise of digital technology, of course, there’s always been a hardcore group of enthusiasts to keep the flame burning, including the good and the great of the electronic music scene. Now that analog is back on the block, Don Buchla and Associates are making the 200E, a modular for the 21st Century with all the traits of working the Buchlidian way, but with integration of MIDI and... Wait for it.... Patch memories! The modular follows the Buchla tradition of banana plugs for architecture and jacks for audio signal routing. The fully tricked out 200E we saw at the show, guided by Peter Grenader from Big City Music was an impressive beast and retails for a cold-sweat inducing $20k or so.
