NAMM 2014: Yamaha THR10 + THR5 DSP Updates (Video)

Yamaha have announced a new update on their Yamaha THR5 and THR10 - a DSP upgrade designed to make the small amp sound like it's filling a big room.

The stereo field of the Yamaha THR series already sounded impressive considering the small size of the amp, that was one of the things that most impressed us about it when we reviewed the modelling amp.

The original THR5 and THR10 models only had one fixed (virtual) microphone position, meaning the sound coming out of the speakers was effectively a replication of what would happen if you stuck one mic on an amp in a studio.

A new upgrade to the THR5 and THR10 sees a twig to the DSP, replicating multiple microphone placement and creating what feels like a more natural sound to the ear. When we listen to an amp in a room, we're hearing reverberations and reflections bouncing around giving a much bigger sense of space.

The gain on the clean channel has also been twigged to allow much more headroom, due to reports from users that the amp's clean channel broke up into distortion too easily (we concur with that one, and this new update seems like a logical step).
