Kevin Godley is a bit of a legend. From his days with 10cc, then Godley and Creme, then a whole raft of amazing video direction work, where he pioneered many many new video effects and direction techniques. I must confess I felt somewhat innadequate while pointing my tiny camcorder in his direction, but he didnt seem to mind.

Mr Godley's new venture is called WholeWorldBand, an ambitious project in iOS app form (iPad only for now) which brings musicians together to collaborate via video clips to create new songs and arrangements. These are then remixed and added to by any other members.

With an impressive colection of seed artists - Ronnie Wood, Stewart Copeland, Passenger, Ethan Johns, Dave Stewart - the concept is to start a song with a performance of some kind in video form, upload using the Whole World Band app, then ask for contributions to the peice. Up to six elements at a time can be mixed together, with unlimited perumations.

If you start a session, it costs a small amount of credits - ranging from 89c to €5.99, but then you might end up with Ronnie Wood or another big artist actually playing on your tune. Mixes can be exported and shared with any revenue they generate shared back amongst the contributing artists.

The idea being that once revenue is being generated, everyone gets paid. Create a worldwide smash from the seeds of the demo - as thats what these mixes are aiming at for now and you could be quids in. Or if the idea of collaborating with some pretty cool musicians is enough - then go for it.

A neat idea, which requires a critical mass to start gaining momentum - so point your pointy thing at the App Store and get creating.
