Most people probably aren’t aware that pianos make up a large percentage of overall sales for companies like Yamaha and Roland. Yamaha of course makes some of the finest acoustic pianos available in the world today too, but if you havent got that kind of money or indeed space, then their electronic range may be more to your liking. The latest addition, the P-70 (black) and P-70S (silver) brings the famous Yamaha P series - favoured by many pro and home musicians alike (ask Jamiroquai, Michael McDonald or Jon Anderson) to a very attractive price point. Featuring a new fully weighted key-board action (Graded Hammer Standard), internal speakers and easy operation. Sonically they hold a focused selection of 10 high quality sounds including a realistic and dynamic grand piano, strings, electric pianos and organs. The concept of a P series is that it allows the musician or performer to easily transport their piano and P-70 is no exception. Weighing in at only 13Kg its easy to move from the car to the gig or from the wings onto the stage. This flexibility is greatly appreciated by students, houses of worship and music teachers. As with all of the current P series range, the P-70 features the half-pedalling sustain system. Rather than simply having ‘on or off’ sustain, Yamaha has enabled a graduated system when used with the optional FC3 sustain pedal. This allows for up to 127 levels of pedal depth resulting in a more accurate piano performance. With 2 x 6 watt internal speakers and comprehensive MIDI implementation the P-70 is also handy in the studio. Used as a weighted action controller keyboard with high quality sound engine the P-70 can work within any computer based recording setup. P-70 and P-70S will be available in the UK from January 2006. RRP £499.
