Carvin have introduced the new Icon IC5S bass guitar. An expansion to the company’s popular Icon Series, the IC5S bass guitar is a 5-string instrument with all the key features of the Icon Series, but without the figured Maple top and gold logo on the headstock characteristic of other models in the series. In making these minor changes, the new IC5S opens the door to a vast array of solid and translucent colors for bass players to choose from.
As part of the new Icon IC5S bass guitar’s feature set, a Maple neck through Alder body sides is standard, as are the special contoured body edges for maximum comfort and the 34-inch ebony fingerboard with 24 frets. The result, say Carvin, is an instrument with outstanding ergonomic design that provides the ultimate in playability, feel, and comfort. Additionally, 4- and 6-string models are available.
Like all Icon basses, the new IC5S features all the electronics that have made the Icon Series a success. The IC5S includes two Carvin SP2 soap bar humbucking pickups as well as 18-volt active/passive electronics that the company says deliver exceptional headroom. The instrument’s volume control features push-pull active/passive selection, and there is also a pickup blend control for further contouring of one’s sound. Additionally, the IC5S provides stacked concentric bass and high frequency controls, a stacked concentric mid frequency and sweep control with a range of 200 – 1,000 Hz, and the Icon’s popular A-style Hipshot bridge for solid, enhanced bottom end. Carvin say that the result is incredible tone that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
By omitting the figured Maple top and gold logo on the instrument’s headstock, bassists have the opportunity to select from a broad range of solid and translucent colors. Further, Carvin’s vast selection of options such as stainless steel frets has proven very popular. By mixing and matching woods, colors, and options, Carvin tell us that bass players can order an instrument that is highly customizable—with over 10,000 combinations—enabling them to fully express every nuance of their musical persona.
Mark Kiesel, Vice President of Carvin Corporation told us, “The new IC5S delivers all the goods that have made the Icon Series so successful. With an extensive range of colors to choose from, bassists everywhere can now own a great feeling, eye-catching instrument with the superior tone quality they’ve been searching for.
