It’s a funny old world, but it looks like despite the cutting edge technology on display from some of the worlds most innovative companies at NAMM, the real show stealer turned out to be good old fashioned piano technology. The all new (or rather original, but better) Rhodes piano range meant that the stand was almost impossible to get near. Visited by endless streams of piano officianados to put their seal on the Rhodes models on display. And the verdict? Well it looks like they really nailed it. We spoke to Jim Williams, designer of the new range who assured us that all the same metals were used in the tines of the piano, plus all the old manufacture processes had been revived to ensure the classic Rhodes sound was adhered to faithfully. We hear that the action has been softened somewhat - a common complaint of the original was that it was hard work to play, there’s also a top model with MIDI control built in so you can integrate it into a rig. Various speaker models are also available to deliver a whopping 300watts per channel so you can flap your trousers whilst tinkling the ivories live. The only thing that wasn’t mentioned was that you’re going to need a roadie again....
