It was Big News when Universal Audio announced the long awaited successor to their UAD card – the card that added additional DSP power to your DAW as well as some very highly respected plug-ins. In fact that was the problem – so many folks where mad for them that they ran out of DSP on the UAD1 – no surprise when you consider how long the card has been going. The new UAD2 uses a much more powerful Tiger Sharc DSP chip and comes in 1 (SOLO), 2 (DUO) or four chip(QUAD) versions. But the big news is that now you can add UAD2 power to your laptop with the UAD2 Solo, a single chip DSP card that slides right into the PCI Expres slot on your lappy. You can also buy a PCI to PCI Express adapter to allow you to plug it into your desktop machine too. The UAD2 Solo will run 32 channels of the Neve Channel Strip - a I've heard a lot of good reports about the plug-ins that run on the UAD platform, but only have a laptop myself.... Hmm... Available for $499 in March 2009.
