As you may or may not know, we use Zoom H4s for all our show recordings, so I was positively drooling at the sight of the new H4N. This latest version appears to be more robust with a larger, brighter screen and boasts a 4-track simultaneous recording feature – hallelujiah! The new, improved on board mics can be set at 90 and 180 degrees by means of a nifty twisting capsule, but you can also take an external mic in on 1/8" inch stereo jack – which can be padded down to –30dB – so it may be fesible to take an addition stereo line level in as well as the standard 1/4 XLR combi inputs on the base of the machine.
Still powered by AA batteries – praise be, who wants to use a field recorder without changeble batteries? The H4N will allegedly run for 10hrs straight and records at up to 96kHz/24 bit and MP3 to SD/SDHC cards of up to 32GB and also has USB 2.0 connectivity. I'm already hankerin' for an upgrade, I'll need to have a word with the accounts department....
Available Feb 2009 $349 street.
