Your workstation's acoustic piano sounds suck? (Mine do!) Get a MicroPiano. Despite what certain sample-snobs subscribe to regarding stereo samples (the MicroPiano's are merely mono), this little module really fills it's specialist role nicely. The acoustic grands are quite convincing, especially in a mix with other sounds. The solo spotlight, unfortunately, is not quite as flattering, especially with the damper pedal down to the metal. Some very questionable overtones rise up and hover around the middle register. Highs tinkle nicely, however, and lows really thunder. In addition, if a piece doesn't require acoustic piano, you can dial up a couple of cutting percussive hammond sounds, rhodes (avoid the high notes) or strings. Fast strings have an incredibly hard attack which may be a bit over the top for any practical purposes other than horror films and Spielberg epics.
Comments About the Sounds:
It's hard to find a workstation with a decent acoustic piano sound at an affordable price. The MicroPiano does an admirable job of filling the typical acoustic piano chasm left by most Korg, Yamaha, Alesis and other sample-playback machine manufacturers. Also has some nice, transparent slow string pads,with ethereal usggestions of wood and resin.
