Aries was a modular synthesizer manufacturer located in Salem Mass., who built high quality modular synths in both factory assembled and kit form. Aries synthesizers featured mini-plug patch connections at the bottom of the modules, making them more compact than other mid-70's manufacturers which used 1/4" plugs. The Aries Series II was a serious full rack modular synth comparable to the ARP 2600. It featured two voltage controlled oscillators, voltage controlled amplifier, 2 envelope generators, Sample & Hold, Low frequency oscillator, mini-moog style mixer, voltage controlled filter, balanced modulator and stereo output (no reverb chamber). The modules sat behind the keyboard in a varnished plywood case. It looks like a large, evil mini-moog. The Aries keyboard has the benefit of a full five octaves, but like most modular synths, no modulation or pitch wheels, only trigger, gate and cv outputs. The series II is a surprisingly light weight, transportable unit.
