Not midi savvy, depend on life energy, the real power is in it expressivity it intrepert everthing that throwed at it, from delicate finger trap, to brush, stick, mallet, elbow, thunderous drum hit, palm, push, even feet, metal, etc. the response is scarry and it's produce different sounds from one to another.
