This is a great (and often underrated) Roland drum machine. The main downfall is the lack of a complete TR-909 set, so therefore it doesn't quite cut it for dance music. The sequencer is the best I have ever used, with a beautiful graphical editing system! The pads are soft rubber and easy on the fingers. The positional pad changes the sound depending on where you hit it (great for ride cymbals and snare drums). The jazz kit is extremely clean as well as the TR-808 kit. There are plenty of editing options and a great variety of kick/snare drums. The MIDI implementation is very complete, so this machine functions well as a controller for any good drum module.

One MAJOR advantage: a backlit display! Ever try to use your R8 in a dark club? Arrrrrrrrrrrgh!

Overrall, I love this machine and I wouldn't give it up. With an external drum module like the R8M, RM50, or DM5 you can really do some damage!

Comments About the Sounds:
Excellent quality of sounds, LOTS of kicks/snares. Extremely clean TR-808 set.

(Thanks to C. Scheffold for this info.)
