I know there are 440 heads out there, but now with the MPC 2000, and 3000, the 440 is just starting to show its age... after 15 years. Originally released for $4000.00 in the U.S., it can still be sought out for around $1500-$2000 used.... cheaper if you're lucky. By far, the most happing machine to drum synthetically on, till the MPC. And the only thing the MPC's got on the 440 is a 16bit converter, and much more RAM. As I said earlier, in a 24-96 trk studio, no one will know it's only 12 bit.

Another plus is not being encumbered by GM, or XG. Because it was manufactured before all that nonsense, it does what you tell it to do, and only plays what you want it to play. These units are rare, and Wine Country Productions has the American market locked down as the ONLY company with support and sales inside the U.S. Otherwise, you must be lucky enough to find one second-hand, and even then send it to CA for repairs. Just another drum machine? Definately not.
