I owned a Black Odyssey for a good while, that is, until I need some cash badly. I bought it for $150 at a keyboard shop before 'vintage' really got cool. While it took me a little time to figure the thing out, it was capable of some really big noise! Most of what I'd heard on ARP's instruments was growly, a la 'Frankenstein' by Edgar Winter, but after playing around with it, I could get some really thick, lush sounds from it. I loved the ADSR on this machine, because it seemed capable of very subtle filter envelope changes that, to me are the essence of 'brass' sounds. I wish I could find another one today, of course, without paying an arm and another appendage for it! Any of y'all out there who think it's a crap synth...SELL ME YOURS!

I just modified my whiteface Oddy with CV/Gate inputs to use with a MIDI/CV convertor. I also did some much needed maintenance on some bad/intermittent slider pots. The outcome? AMAZING!
This synth is incredible! Great sounds with lots of modulation capabilities. The panel controls are laid out a bit strange, but once you figure it out, get ready for some great sounds.
This is the first time in a long time that I got lost while tweaking sounds AND had a blast while doing it. As you play with different settings, this synth will put a smile on your face and make you say "now THAT'S cool!". Well, I said it anyway. :)
There's a lot about this synth's sound that I really like. The filter for one. More specifically the sound of the resonance. It has lots of character! The OSC sync option is also very nice sounding. You can also FM the filter with either OSC and can apply FM to the OSCs as well. There's also ring mod and other sound mangling features that I'll omit due to my slow typing. One thing for sure though, there is a lot to appreciate on this synth.

I would agree, they are pretty sensitive instruments. You can get some amazing sounds from them but you need to spend some time on em.
I tried one a while back and couldn't get much from it, then someone showed me some stuff to do and it was like a different synth.

I had to respond to the comment that ARP Odyssey's are crap. A few years ago, I was new to synthesizers and found an Odyssey at a good deal and just bought it on impulse. All I got out of it was some crappy sounds. I soon gave up and sold it. Well, I became friends with a guy who owned an Odyssey and a 2600 and did I ever regret selling it when I heard the sounds he got out of his Odyssey. I would take an Odyssey over any Moog any day because there's something magical about that sound and the flexibility. No, it's not a terribly fat or hard-edged sounding synth but it makes the most amazing sounds if you know what you're doing. Early Kraftwerk is all Minimoog and Odyssey (and we all know how amazing early Kraftwerk is - check out their BBC television performance of "Autobahn" where a Minimoog does the bassline and a whiteface Odyssey does the lead sounds - simply amazing). ARP's are a little tricky at first until you get the hang of it but then once you know what you're doing you'll realize what all the fuss is all about. I love ARP's most of all, but also Moogs, Prophet-5, Jupiter-4, SH-5, VCS3, 60's Farfisa and Vox organs - vintage keyboards are simply the best.

IT WAS MY FIRST SYNTH--I LOVED IT, EXCEPT FOR NO MEMORY. HOWEVER, IT NEEDED AN OSCILLATOR REPAIRED TWICE, AND I GAVE UP. IT SITS IN THE BASEMENT, SO I HAVE ROOM FOR THE JUNO 60, AKAI AX-60 AND YAMAHA SY-22, ETC. IT IS GREAT FOR LEARNING SYNTHS, SO MANY SLIDERS. ALSO, I LOVED MAKING WIND, BIRD, SURF SOUNDS, OTHERS I CAN'T DESCRIBE, AND MIXING A FAT BASS WITH SOME PINK NOISE, PLAYING WITH THE OCTAVES, LFO, ETC. BECAME A TRADEMARK IN MY RECORDINGS. WHEN I FIND OUT HOW I CAN GET THAT SECOND OSCILLATOR FIXED FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, I'LL PUT IT BACK IN COMMISSION, CAUSE I LOVED IT; BUT FOR NOW, THE ANIX AND SY22 WITH THE JUNO60 ARE JUST FINE.
