The S-1100 is a great Sampler unit! It really sounds better than its "bigger" brothers S2000 - S3200XL. Especially the high frequencies sound much more better than the newer akai samplers. The S-1100s only mistake is that it has got no highpass and bandpass filter. if it had this it would be the fattest sampler in the universe!

One of the best samplers out there! Sound quality is amazing, deluxe editing features and effects...very simple to use and way ahead of its time... this older piece still stands out... and with a price tag nowadays anyone can afford.
If you see one, buy it! Much better over the S1000, make sure you get RAM maxed out and scsi zip drive to speed up loading (but be warned you will need a scsi to centronics 50 cable to hook up the zip) Hopefully we will all see an end to boring stock sounds, and start creating from the ground up... this could be your tool.
If anyone has a S1100 EX they want to sell, email me an offer.

Just got one, it'll join my Akai family (S950 & S1000 keyboard).
The nice thing are the built-in fx (although I have to check their quality first).
It needs a new display backlight, and I'll add a SCSI harddisk too.
To me, these older samplers are the best value you can get right now : with a little luck and patience you can find a machine with 32 Mega, SCSI harddisks of 1 Giga are cheap as well, and on top of that the S1100 can be used as a HD-recorder too.
I feel like I have all the equipment I need now to do whatever I want (with over 8 minutes of sampletime), plus Akai equipment is built like a tank (I haven't had a single problem with my 950 in 7 years).
