This is in response to joey dee's comment about VX600 not storing patches after powering off - Well, that's not true for my VX600 (and any other one I've owned and I can count to 4 right now). VX600 is designed to store patches and retain them after powering off and it does just that without any problems. So most likely, your backup battery is dead!

cool synth,very rare,and yes-it does sound like an xpander.i should know, i had an xpander side by side to compare! but dont think that getting an akai vx600 is like having an xpander,the akai has many short comings that quickly led to its demise..in fact they seem to pass very quickly when they were new and many people at the time wanted digital synths..so the akai vx600 quickly stopped being manufactured,hence its rareness..the akai vx uses most of the same chips as the xpander,thus it sounds expanderish i must say.. but the akai vx has midi but no sysex so you have to edit with the display that is tedious and the displays burn-out(dim mostly) and then your worse off..you cannot use external editors like sounddiver or anything because of the lack of midi sysex-kind of a bummer i think..and you dont have nearly as many filters as the xpander for sure..but the akai can create some nice pads/strings, strange sounds cool sweeps-oh yea- there is no pitch bend/mod wheel,but you can assign one of the knobs on the panal to act as a mod control/filter control wheel..good filter,but a lil steppy at times.also to you cannot save patches in the unit-they are erased when you power down,maybe its just mine,but you must store user made patches on a memory card..i also think the vx is much more punchy than the xpander- i ha d a choice of which to keep at one time,the xpander or the vx600..i kept the vx600...i just wish someone would make a midi chip to access midi sysex in the vx600..then i would be much more desirable!..thanks!

One of the coolest synths. A Mini Xpander. Great modulation possibilities, same VCO�s as an Xpander and a funky lopass/hipass filter. A bit tricky at first, but great sounding (and more importantly, different sounding to other analogs) As someone said, for $500 it�s the best bargain around. Try and get a real analog polysynth which can be used as 6 seperate monsynths each on their own midi channel and each with a seperate output for that money! Stonking!
