I am the kind of musiican that enjoys exploring the quality and the versatility of instruments. I got my Alesis SR-16 as a present from my sister. I had played it quite a number of times on display in a music store in Wheaton, MD. I would, without hesitation, recommend this machine to musicians both new and veteran, because of the following reasons: 1) It is easy to use. The manual lays out instructions for use that make it easy to understand the capabilities of the instument, and most importantly, what your frame of mind needs to be when interfacing with it for the best results. A large number of styles and fill-ins come with the machine to provide anyone with a good place to start with. 2) Small, but powerful. The SR-16 has quality samples. Unilike alot of other machines, these samples come both in the dry form, and the form with various sound effects added. The dry samples can be refined with effects that suits the recording artist's/ hobbyist's tastes and needs. I've recorded directly from the Alesis in a studio. It allows you to layer one sound on top of the other when recording, too. 3) Editiing Capabilites. A song can easily be created either by combining a smaller number of loops, or even by recording a pattern and freestyling over the basic pattern freestlye. The SR-16 also allows the user to edit, delete or even change events (where an event is a beat), and souds effortlessly. 4) MIDI It's fun to be able to create a basic idea on the Alesis in solitude and then expound on it using other MIDI compatible instruments. It is an excellent Master sorce for a steady rythmn for drummers and Bands alike. 5) Output/Input: Just look at the back of the machine! 6) Capacity/ Backup capability The SR-16 allows for the retention of alot of information and songs, and in the event that you want to store this away for future refence, it can easily be done with a normal tape, microcassette recorder, or minidisc! I'd say that thye Alesis is a good place to start and stay. Your interest and diligence is what keeps the whole thing fresh and moving!

I am a gutarist and composer who uses an Alesis SR-16 for composition and demo recording. I am very satisfied with the SR-16 which I have purchased second hand. It has proven to be absolutely indispensable for my solo writing and recording projects when getting my drummer involved would be too burdensome. However, the person who sold me my SR-16 could not provide the handbook/instruct- ions. I would appreciate any tips on where I could get my hands on one. That said, I find this unit to be user-friendly and surprisingly easy to figure out even in the absence of instructions. I know it is capable of far more than I have managed to get out of it. The sounds are surprisingly realistic, I have repeatedly managed to wow my friends with it. My drummer is very resentful of it because I am always using it to come up with things that are very hard for him to duplicate. If some one would hook me up with a manual I will definitely update my review. Thank you in advance.

A great realsounding drummachine at its price. It hasnt got so much electronic drumsounds, but if you want them, this is the wrong machine to have. It's easy to program, and sounds very good. I sold mine to get a vocoder instead. I miss the SR16 a bit.

december 5 picked up a new sr 16 from the music store. december 6 sent back do to a bad sample chip. 37 phone calls 4 months 1 hour wait at fed ex for my new broken drum machine . a solo album with no drums,lost studio time and a 4 month wait . never will anyone i know buy something with the name alesis

For about 8 now years I have been listening to "House" music. So being a DJ from the Atlanta, GA area I began to think about producing/writing. Folks it's not as easy as some of these metal head rednecks think. I take a tremendous amount of concentration and arrangement to get something that doesn't sound like a Junior Vasquez on crack mix. Sure the AR-16 with some time can make some really great tracks with the assistance of some other rather expensive gear. Someone wrote that the sounds are very real. That's exactly it. None of the sounds on the AR-16 will blow you away, but they are very realistic. Well I'm still learning how to use it, and not really having the time spend on it just is really fustrating. My JP-8000 does helps take the AR-16 to new heights with the assistance of Cakewalk. This is a great beginer box. If I had to do it again I'd still get it. The sounds are very real.
