For techno- makers, this machine isn't great; it has it's place, though, as an accessory drum machine when polyphony is excessive on one's drumstation etc.
The lack of gating makes it less useful for punchier drum sounds, and the kicks are a waste of space - generally too reverbed to be of any use. It would be better if it were 8-bit, though it has its uses as a drum samples CD, perhaps, when one can modify the sounds in a sampler.
It is valuable to have some real snares and hats, but I often don't use it. I always trigger it from MIDI; no use for the sequencing in the machine.

This was the first drum machine I owned, and while I don't miss the sounds, I do miss that fill button. If you're just looking for a fun, easy to use drum machine, get this one. If you're making "serious" tracks, you'd be better of spending the money for better sounds. It's hard to mix some of these sounds into professional mixes because of the built in cheap effects. I'd rather have dry samples that I can mold, but when I first got this it was used heavily in my one man jam sessions. I ended up selling it along with the rest of my cheapo toys when I decided I wanted to get more into the technical aspects of recording. Even though I may have a much better sound now, I do in a way miss the ability to midi my toys up and beat the crap out of them. Why isn't the professional gear as much fun to play with? Imagine the MPC with a fill button...seriously, I want to design a drum machine just so I can put a fill button on it.

I've only had this drum machine for a day, but so far, I'm digging it. I'm very surprised on how easy to use this thing is! I've already programmed several patterns into it. The drum sounds themselves sound a bit dated with the reverb, but most of them sound pretty good. Overall, the SR-16 is a pretty good drum machine that won't take a bite out of your budget.

Great machine for the money. Easy to use and making a quick drum part is a peice of cake but whats the point if all your rythmic masterpeices suddenly disappear due to the back up battery dying with no warning or goodbye. And then you gotta desolder the dead thing. Guess I gotta be more organised and keep a diary. Still, a good little machine.

I've been using it for all sorts of purposes. It's got the best, easy to use sequencer (because of the fill button) but the internal memory-battery runs out in 1.5 - 2 years time, without any indication that it needs replacement. that's a very, very bad thing!
