This was my 1st drum machine, so it has some sentimental value with me. Great acoustic sounds, but it's not limited just to "normal sounds." You can come up with very cool, unusual drum sounds by altering the tuning of the drums. For example, I've tuned the gated snare and kick to sound like some kind of churning industrial factory and the crash tuned all the way down to imitate steam blasts. The claps tuned all the way down, with some velocity difference from the pads, sound like troops marching over a bridge. You can also use the same sound multiple times in the same kit and offset it by a few steps. This can result in flanging or delay effects w/o having to use an external f/x. The only thing I've had to do is to replace the lithium battery. Besides that, it's worked great since I bought back in '87. Yeah, it might not have the XOX or techno sounds that the technoheads are looking for, but who cares unless you want to sound like everyone else? I know it sounds crazy, but not all synthsists are in to techno.

HR16b is a pretty decent drum machine,very easy to use.And for the price why not pick one up?Bands like "Konsume A Human" still use them> and they still kick some but>

The bottom line is the sounds are clean and clear. I just wish there were more of them. I give it a five almost on that alone. Being a techy I have worked on a few of these. There are two types.
The first has what looks to be solder coated copper traces for the pc boards under the pads. This is the type that gives trouble the most. The main sound pc board is different too.
The second has carbon type traces under the pads and gives mush less trouble. The sound pc board is quieter too. No hiss. I think the latest eprom rev is 1.09 but might be 2.02. Mine is a type two.
To usually cure the funky pad problem take it apart, BE SURE AND MARK THE RIBBON CONNECTORS ON ONE END-THE PIN 1 THING and clean the rubber button bottoms with alcohol. 99.9 % isypropel is best. Most is 70%. If you have a type 1 then use a pencil eraser or very fine sandpaper on the traces. If yours has some traces that is badly corroded and is about severed into you can get a conductive pen from MCM Electronics and fix it or contact Alesis.

It has great, full sounds. I bought it because I knew that a lot of good people were using it: Leftfield, Moby, Sunscreen... Don't have any problems with its rubber pads - I am using it thru Midi with Cakewalk. Too bad I cannot use more than 16 sounds at a time.

I had the HR16-B back in 91-92, nicknamed it Alex. This was my FIRST piece of gear. It was the easiest piece I have ever owned. I got it primarily because 808 State had one and found out that was for good reason. Anyway, for techno/house It's a sure bet.
