It's an OK drummachine. It was very highly speced at the time it was released but by todays
standards, with all the sampling CDs etc, the sounds are a bit bland. The acoustic and jazz
samples sounds good but there is a fairly limited amount of techno and dance sounds. The most
stupid thing of the design is that it's not possible to use the internal effects
and the separate outputs at the same time. OK the reverb is not that good anyway but it can
still be useful once in a while. After the release of the DR660 not many drummachines have appeared.
It seems to be one of the last from Roland. The quality is good though it is
a bit hard to get the 808 and 909 sounds to have the same depth and agressiveness
as the originals. And the 909 hi-hats are not included. It's a good machine if
you want to sketch something out fast and later replace some of the sounds
with samples.

Geez.
255 sounds that are editable? -- yes they are -- fairly extensively.
I thought that I would buy this machine to actually make songs
on it. -- naaahh!! I have made it quite the device for using it as a
drum sound generator; sampling the sounds into my computer and
using it in my step write MOD sequencer. Or just playing the sounds
in real time.
I suggest for the money; get one of these. If you need a quick picture
of one, go in this very site to E-mu and click on EMAX II. Walla!!!
On the top left of the EMAX is the little pandora itself. You can
imitate Tony Banks' rhythm on the Genesis album "DUKE". c. 1980.

If anyone out there wants to hear the most
technically incredible, gorgeous,
beautiful, sinewy, complex
drum progamming achieved on a Boss DR-660 to date,
check out an album called "Hard Normal Daddy"
by an artist named 'Squarepusher.'
It's amazing.

I have a 660 but I am a bit dissatisfied with a couple of things, first, you can't tune/detune the drums using midi, no pitchbending, second you can't use the effects on the extra outs, and third, the pads are good but alas too damn small. Pleases correct me about the tuning by midi, if I'm wrong, I hope I am.

The DR-660 is a very PHAT box for the money, you could spend countless hours editing the different drum sounds it comes with to produce sounds you wont hear anywhere else. The reverb and delay is pretty decent, but flanger and chorus could definently use some work. But if you work with them enough you can get some amazing electro sounding beats in combination with the 808 kit.
The only other downfall I have is that Boss didn't include 909 hi-hats :(
909 just doesn't sound the same without them, but I have found that by taking the RealOH sound and tuning down the decay to -26 and adjusting the Naunce to +6 you'll get a somewhat convincing 909 hat. Other than that, the DR-660 is a FUNK machine for the money!
