I've been using this machine for about 6 months now, and am still finding new capabilities. You can make some excellent electric basslines and the cutoff/resonance/decay dials are nice for physically modelling your grooves. The drums are good, but the bass is massive. I sample the lines into my computer and add breakbeats and other samples when making my songs. The custom kit is a nice feature.

The only gripes I have are:

1) Small memory (only 100 user patterns). 2) Bad pads. 3) Too few tracks.

If you are getting into beats, then this box is a safe bet. Just make sure you get the right adapter!

Actually, the hiss has nothing to do with the AC adapter. I used a boss adapter on TWO different DR-202 and still could hear the decay noise. It's just cheap engineering by Roland. If you're using a hi-fi set-up, I don't see how you could miss it.

Daniel Jones a professional user from Australia writes:
I've been using a 202 for a few weeks live now and I must say it is awesome. I play live with two other guys and out gear list consists of two DR202's (one of which is mine, an S20 (MINE! Great little box.), a SP202, two KAOSS pads (new and great for live work), as well as an RM1X. The 202's fit in perfectly for our low end.

All you people who have been complainign about the hiss, you need to use a BOSS 9v adapter. Yeah I was pretty pissed too, cost me 50 bucks australian, but if you use any other adapter you get noise. Same with all BOSS products.

Any younger people just starting out in the electronic music game, the 202 is a perfect machine. If you can get it cheap with a 202 sampler, then you wont be needing any more gear for a while.

S Man a part-timer user from Chicago, USA writes:
I've been using the DR-202 to record a new album onto my 4-track. Im one of those underground, obscure types who likes to tweek out 4-tracks and put out music just on tapes. Anyway Ive been sending the Groove machine straight to my 4-track and after I record it, I get ALOT of hiss, as well as a low recording. I can't figure this drum machine out. Nothing I have ever recorded has such a hiss.

So, although I love the sounds, the hiss sucks. New users, test this out!!
