This is a great machine.....just link it together with it's brother (the SP-202, another great underrated machine) and you can really funky and dirty...It is a little cheap feeling, but hey it's a BOSS product...these are the low-end...and I love them... don't think of what your machine can't do....think of what it can do...shit, you can sound like kraftwerk one minute, and 2 live crew the next....and then you can do your own thing too...get straight up wack with this piece....fuck the presets....Does anyone use pre-sets?

I just purchased the 202, and love it! The only thing is that the pads a kind of hard to hit, and i was wondering if anyone else has this problem, or if its a flaw in mine. Email me please if u have an answer. Thanks

I have a little different perspective than most users in that I have more drum machines than I know what to do with. I own the DD-50 MIDI drum sets. I own a PMA-5 with hundreds of presets. Any percussive backing that I want to use can also be easily created with my workstation which has a builtin database of everything needed to build a unique drum pattern from the ground up.
So then, why the DR-202? For the sounds and the filters. There are a lot of 90's type percussion sounds. Really low fi and dirty drums - some useful sound effects - awesome filters.
Since I am a good musician, but an amateur drummer - this helps me create and explore some percussive patterns that I may not have considered otherwise. You can create a simple drum pattern - then modify it with any number of groove templates that will give it a different feel. This feature alone is enough to cause me to think about different phrasings in the music that I create.
The layout is intuitive. I spent an hour with it before I opened the manual and was able to take it to its linit without having to open the book - which is always a good thing.
Some people love the 202, others can't stand it. I think its fun.
