Yes i concur with the last dude..... no backlit screen, just a couple lit buttons.... that's it...the rca isn't so bad actually because i wouldn't want this piece of junk anyhow.
right now the 202 sits still lodged in my memory and i am trying very hard to forget that i was jonesing enough one day to get this thing!!

I wasn't going to speak up, but that last review compels me. For the love of all that is decent, DON'T judge the 202 by its blood-curdlingly cheesy demo song. Check out some of the "abstract" stuff in the mid to late Hip Hop 3's to hear it in its element. The one thing I won't diss this box on is its sounds. I found that most of the cheese can be exorcised by creating and tweaking your own custom kits and running the drum sounds through compression.
But thanks to some shortcomings... -no backlighting -no separate audio out for bass -too-quiet RCA hookups -no pattern change through midi -realtime record issues I couldn't whole-heartedly recommend this box. I like to think that the original designer of this machine had one seriously killer piece of kit in mind before management and the accounting department turned it into Dr. Basketcase.
If you want to do clean, radio-ready electro pop or straight dance tracks, this probably isn't the gear for you (spend more money). If you just want analog cheap, get a committed emulator. If you like grungy, low-fi sounds and quirky features to putz with, by all means, check this out.

I must say this is just junk....i know roland isn't at fault..they just bought Boss. So Boss incorporated, listen up;
I don't even own this shitbox anymore; i returned it in less than a week and exchanged it for a Korg Electribe ER-1. The 202 has MAYBE two or three decent patches, but i didn't even bother sampling them; just listen to the demo on the box, if you get your hands on it...HORRIBLE...By the way, did it come with a power adapter? no....why not? hell if i know....doesn't matter, cuz i returned the mutha anyway.....
The interface is just...well, i'll just say Boss should be ashamed when you put this next to the electribe. Yes, the 202 IS noisy too, on top of all that....
anyway, as i said, the patches were pretty poor(so cheese they made me cringe), which probably makes you wonder why i bought this thing...well it was a mistake....no other reason. It sounded OK and i was jonesing for a drum machine, okay?
If you want quality beats and bass, go with the electribe ER-1...about the same price and infinitely better(sound quality, user interface, programmability, etc..)

hey , the machine but have a few nitches but its really not to expensive either. as for the sound its got its own and thats the most you could wish for from any machine.i use the sp 202 ,dr 202 , vs 840 , and a decent computer program.ihave no problem sequencing with it. you can use the bass midi with your keyboard and ad another layer i like it.

I bought a DR202 about 3 months ago and I'm in a love-hate relationship with it. I'd give it a 5/5 for decent dancy/hiphop sounds and comparative ease of use, but like someone said above, Roland haven't built reliability into it. I was absolutely dumbfounded to discover that just by putting a pattern with a bass part (I am generally very impressed with the bass / organ voices when used with the r/t controls) next to one with the bass part muted in a song, the whole machine has a heart attack. The last note of the bass track is sustained throughtout the rest of the song, and ALL OTHER SONGS UNTIL YOU TURN THE MACHINE OFF! I sent the machine back to Roland with this complaint, and they kept it for a couple of weeks, (when I needed it) and sent it back with the pathetic message 'fault not found'.
That is a serious fault in my opnion, and if it's a common design fault then this is a very poor design. If my machine is faulty, then they have very poor service. Either way they have just failed to make a great little machine and instead arsed up the whole thing.
But damn it I still like the sound.
