I have the original DR-550 (not the mkII). The difference between these two is the mkII has more patches (about 91 against 48 or so in mkI), with more 'electronic' sounds (808,909,...). One of the things I like most is its portability. You can plug it some batteries and carry along wherever you want. It is my first drum box, so I can't tell you many in comparison with others, but the editing is fairly simple, altough not perfect. The samples sound very good; you can alter its Decay, Color, and Pan.
