I have 2 mk1's & a mk2 (there isn't too much memory, so after i'd written 5 or so songs & filled the memory i decided to buy another...)

I've used them for 2 full albums & numerous live shows, with no hiccups at all...well early on i accidentally let the baterries run out, wiping the memory & losing all my tracks to date.

I don't really go for the bongo whistle sound, but there are plenty of good industrial/pop type sounds - think early NIN.

I named My first dr-550 HAL (as the computer in 2001 was called), because i was expecting it to try & take control of everything + malfunction & the like. It has, however been quite super!

the dr. 550 mk1 (not mk2) was the first drum machine i ever had. i got it when iw as like 15 years old back in 1993. and it did a great job for what i needed it for. it was easy 2 program patterns and songs and edit sounds re-tuning etc.. but i can see how it MAY have been difficult without a manual. luckily i got mine with the manual. but for a 15 year old kid who was constantly under the influence of drugs and alchol, knowing this box inside and out was a big feat to accomplish. heh anyhow id reccommend this to any kids out there who are in guitar based bands to use this.. its not really techno oriented even tho it does have some half-asses samples of tr-808 sounds.. i never used the 808 sounds tho i used the real drum sounds... until 1 day we were playin a show as local openers for godflesh and at the end of our set we trashed everything and smashed it into about 100 small chunx of plastic.. but since then ive musically advanced far beyond this lil box, but id buy another one just for memories sake cause this lil guy will allways hold a place in my heart..

Had this machine for quite some time now, mebbes 10 yrs or so, although to be honest it has been boxed for some of those, at the moment it sits nicely ontop of my emaxII and quite happily bashes out whatever i put into it. A few things, this thing has no memory so whatever you program into it bear in mind that you will have to save, verify and load back in after youve switched the box off. If you can be bothered to do this it can hold quite a few patterns and 8 songs that can be chained. It has quite a few features for its size, anything you bash in is automatically quantized which can be handy or annoying depending on tastes, you can choose from a number of time signatures ie 4/4 3/4 2/4 etc, the number and quality of sounds is quite good (I cant speak for the Mk2 i have a MK1) plenty of stuff to make things interesting, Hi-Hats are canny good, snares also congas etc, bass drums- some are shite some are okay, a few more bongos or something instead of those cheesy scratches would be nice but hey...you can add sustain to the sounds and change its colour (similar to tone) to make them a bit more interesting, it will MIDI sync to other sequencers etc (although only has a MIDI in) has 2 output jacks. I see them go for about 50 quid on Ebay quite often, ive thought about selling it but i never will cos its a great piece of kit to bash out some simple rhythms (and more complex ones if you can be arsed to save them to tape!) Only thing with mine is that the MIDI in port is buggered and leads need to be wiggled or taped into position or else it stops and starts and it hums audibly, does anyone elses? part from that 4 out of 5!
