I've had my RZ-1 for ten years now. It was my first sampling drum machine. For what it is, it's great fun!!!! Today I use a SP-1200, MPC3000, and computer sequencers for all my sampling / sequence needs, and I'll sample the onboard RZ sounds from time to time. It's a really cool "retro" box. I wouldn't spend more then 60 bucks for one. I love the bass, and High Hat sound. Funny, it cost around 600 bucks when it hit the market....my god! I'll be keeping mine forever. Very much a must have for gear heads searching for odd lo-fi sounds.

i've looked for a cheap beatbox ever since i got rid of every drum machine i've own. i finally found a rz-1 at a pawn shop for $59. This one of the best deals i've ever had. this was the drum machine Prince Paul used on his early productions: DE LA SOUL, 3rd BASS(the gas face), etc.
if you are a veteran to samplers and know how to properly chop and mix loops NOTHING can do what this does for the money.
i have lots of vintage keyboards and new computers with all the great software but the RZ-1 still has it's niche.
INSTANT SAMPLED DRUMS
it's the poor-man's sp-1200.
sure, there's no way to truncate or change the envelope. only four samples at a second each but oh...what you can do with such limitations are amazing. new sample arrangements and drum patterns come easily.
it's best used IMHO as a song inspiring drum machine. just grab some random sounds and instantly you're pounding away something new.
some quick tips:
eq your samples ahead of time
if you sample drums layer them with the on board sounds.
big shoutout to PEANUTBUTTER WOLF for reminding me about this drum machine and making me lust for two years over getting one.

tsck tsck tsck tsck tsck tsck tsck tsck tsck now wait a minute... probably the best deal on the planet if you like the old chicago house. fantastic closed hats, and claps, cool toms, plus you can sample. The only real problem is that the claps and ride are sent to the same out, so you can't do much to control the volumes individually. You can't do better for $100. so much fun

This drum machine rules. I love the sounds they are great. this machine is made for people who are into techno. If you are looking for real drum sounds don't even think about it. it is very easy to work I bougth mine without a manual, but manage to figure it out. my favorite sound is the open hihat, because it is very unique. the drawbacks are that the memory is real small and you can only sample probably like half a second, but just enough to sample a 909 kick or some noise. If you are into dance music I guarantee you have heard this machine before. well that is all i have to say, If you decide to buy one listen to it first don't just buy it and spect a 909 or groove machine because it is not. The rz1 is a unique drum machine that has some great sounds.

all i can say is for the short time that i got to use one ,which was about 10or11 years ago,i was alot of fun to use.i never used the programing part really,but the sampling section was cool and the stock sounds were cool too. its a great cheesy drum machine for all you cheesers outthere like me,who have a appreciation for lo fi gear or toy type instruments. i recommend it ecspecially if your like me and don't really make a big fuss over learning to work stuff and trouble shooting with old out of date music gear. if anyone is selling one let me know!"
