This was my first ever drum machine (cost me £312 in 1987 - prior to that I'd used Linndrums and Drumtraks and whatnot but they were all out of my price range). I stuck with it for a year or so but the sounds were poor quality (at a time when I had no other sources of sounds). I also hit a problem with the sampled sounds. The machine would record a tiny bit of icky noise in front of the sound that you were trying to capture. This was audible on playback as a non-clean attack portion of the sound and as a slight timing delay when trying to sequence sampled sounds with the preset sounds. Another thing I noticed was the pitifully small amount of memory for patterns compared to machines I'd used before (esp. if using the higher quantise values). I eventually replaced it with an Alesis HR16 which was light years ahead in its facilities (but sounded even more horrible in its niceness).
These days I can sort of understand why the RZ1 is more popular. People can mix and match sounds from different sources and appreciate the RZ1 for its cute hihats/toms etc. without being reliant on it for kick or snare.

The little grey box of cheeezy 80's goodness, you gotta love the damn thing. Got mine for about 15 dollars from a friend, though after using it would have paid more.Try running it through a Bass Micro Synth, gives the kick some very electro punch and totally destroys the cymbals, almost like a bit depth converter, it's great.don't ever part with yours and if you want to give it to a friend and have him hit you over the head with it and then sell it to me for 15$

this thing is great,i got mine on ebay after reading the reviews here. there are a couple of short comings but over all it's one of the best drum machines for the price.it is really ruff as a sampler but so quick and easy to use (i like the ruff sound though).if your looking for something to add to your hard techno,ruff hip hop, or oldschool house trax pick it up in a new york minute. everyone has explained most of the functions in their reviews here but one major short coming that hasn't been mentioned is that you can't switch patterns in pattern mode (you have to string them togeather ahead of time in song mode). this kind of holds you back if you like mixing live but it really isn't such a big deal. it would be almost perfect if it did do this, but for under $100 you really can't complain. the sounds are all great too, maybe not all of them are great as a stand alone unit but if your running other gear there will be a time where you could use each and every one. if you need a good oldschool beat box for your next recording session i would pick this over most units,cause it's easy to use, quick, and with the money you'll save you can take your girl out and have a good time.

We used one of these extensively in the Old Days, a nice easy-to-use drum machine that featured heavily on our demo tracks. Unfortunately, it never ended up on our CD - and we no longer have the unit, a shame really.

I got this box used for $190 ~8 years ago. Didn't like the kick/snare to much, but the toms were cool IMO. The hi-hats, and ride cymbals cut thru a mix. I will not part from this unit.
BTW, the sample pads can make up for the weaknesses of the kick/snare.
