i got mine for $60 from a friend who'd let it collect dust for a few months. one of the sample tone knobs on mine is a bit loose but after you choose your tone a piece of tape keeps it in place. also my output needs to be serviced cos its making a serious hiss when i use it to record. but those are just the minor problems of my personal unit, overall it is a rad drum machine and i think the sampling feature and everything that comes with it (short sample times, the way that sample 1 cancels sample 2 and how sample 3 cancels sample 4) all makes for some interesting electronic percussive tracks. is there a modern version of this drum machine (i.e. something that lets you sample external noises and then sequence them)? id be really interested in anything anybody knows about it. im much more into making percussive tracks out of my own noises as opposed to what i consider factory presets. i love this drum machine!

This unit is extremely cool. The one that I own has a rare (?) mod which allows for selection between 3 kits (acoustic, electric, latin) The kits for the cymbals can be different than the kits for the drums, thanks to the handy toggle switches. The coolest feature of this mod is that it has expanded memory for ***ADDITIONAL SAMPLES***, in selectable banks. Have you ever seen one like this? Well, have you?

I had one of these bad boys back in 1995, when i was running a small pre pre production studio in my basement.I couldnt afford the mpc-60 or the sp-1200,so my friend told me he saw a sampling drum machine at a pawn shop.I ran down and got it took it home plugged it up to my akai s-900 sampled a kick and a snare and fell in love it is real easy to use and if you get the levels on the sample in just right you drums will truly be bangin i saved the samples on the s-900 for a kid at 18 i was in heaven and my beats stood up to all my friends that had the expensive stuff if you can find one get it edit your sounds on a sampler first then send em by audio to the casio.Why ? because you can have 4 extra outputs on your sampler free to use.trust me if your on a budget do it sync to tape if you know how and your in there. mike pepp a.k.a hot lord extreme --------------out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smooth rollin' machine. It grows on you after a somewhat sketchy first impression. I hacked Into the MT jack (Tape Backup) and added a stereo 1/4 inch in/out jack for ez intergration into my system... If you didn't know it the Rz-1 can save the Pattern data and samples for your tracks in binary (bleeps n bloops). Originally You were supposed to back it up on Cassette tape but now I just Record it digitally in my wave editor....I have a funny idea to then Burn them to cd as tracks so I can make Sample banks for it. Then if something live turns up :) well you just bring along your trusty diskman....and bamn, load patterns and samples on the fly....hmmm now that i think about it.......You could have 2 diskmans, one with a cd of only patterns and the other with just sample data.......You know, trying out different patterns with different sample banks...ahhhh, thats not taking it to far eh?
Not what I would really really want for the Rz-1 is a pc utilty which you could load into 1-4 samples and then for the program to spit out the data in Rz-1 binary (bleeps and bloops) data. That way you could get the most higest fidelity transfer from the original sample to the rz-1, I do believe it would be a pure digital transfer ( ie. bypassing the rz-1's maybe possibly dodgy 1985 cheap A/D convertor :)). Now I'm not saying that it doesn't give the samples their character but I'd like the option to go either way, you know. Also you gotta admit it would be nice to have some noise free samples on it. Damn...any one interested in programing something like this!!!! I wouldn't have a clue myself I know zip about programin'

have just picked one up for �45. ride and 2 of the samples are very faint..anyone know how to get these fixed? Also it doesn't store patterns or samples so I will follow jaime's advice and try and replace the battery (!). What I like is the useability. Instead of spending ages loading up files onto my mp2000xl and then forgetting what I was going to do, its all instant access, with no fiddly menus between me and the idea. otherwise i'm using it more to dirty up the akai samples. When they finally write the history of samplers this one will be there, and by that time it'll be in a glass case in a museum with a security guard next to it.
