THe SK-1 (well, actually, RadioShack's OEM version of it; pull off the metal RS tag and it has "CASIO SK-1" molded into the plastic) was my first keyboard...I got it for Christmas in 1990. This thing, while its sounds are grainy and crappy, was a LOT of fun. I used to record my voice into it and pitch it up to try and sound like a cartoon character, and that additive harmonic synthesis, I spent hours trying to make it sound like the synth in "pump up the jam" (oberheim Matrix-12, I think), and could never get it.
Also, using that cheesy Human Voice over the demo was REALLY fun, and guaranteed to drive people crazy when cranked up. Man, I should find this thing and play with it some, I miss it now!

The SK-1is the best ROAD TRIP sampler product ever to hit the market. On the road goofs - excessively whisky friendly - great for hacking out 2 part harmony with your acoustic guitar on the side of a mountain - and how many times have your friends sampled the 'F WORD' and stretched it till you wanted to scream and hide the batts?????????

o brothers of the sk army!! help me for my sk has bit the dust. if any one can help me ressurect it let me know. i have committed the grave sin of feeding 9v into its 7.5v power input, and now it lights up to say it's on, but no sound comes out? what have i done?? help me bring my sampling buddy back to life.
i consider this the best $au55 i ever spent. give the flute voice a slow onset envelope and switch on the portamento for instant theremin imitations. great for dub trance. then overdrive the flux out of it. the brass voice thru a distortion pedal and then through the filter on my system 100, with an analogue sequencer opening and closing the filter.
the synth drums through distortion!! man. i have had the best fun playing the brass or string sounds through a wah pedal, the synth drums through a wah are your road to 808 nirvana.

The SK-1 is quite a bunch of fun. At first I was making dumb explosive/percussive noises by sampling my voice/breath/whatever came out of my mouth. Then I hooked it up to the output of my PC and sent out a sample from one of my favorite tunes that i wrote and instantly I could play it on the mini keyboard. Sounded like shite, but hey it worked. It's got a crunchy sorta lo-fi sound, and I wonder how well it would work to sample a breakbeat and noodle with it. One of the envelope choices makes for a halfway decent digital delay - kinda... It plays the sample looped, each reactivation at a noticably lower volume. It's not half bad. It can make some really good Sine wave stuff, if only I could get the keyboard to tune down an octave or two... it's really loud even with the crappy speaker that comes with the item. Look on the net for a "circuit bending" mod for this, add some useful knobs to your $10 toy. Apparently, some early models don't have an I/O board...

Yo' man, kick the SK-1. Casio's got a new puppy otu. It's called the SK-60. It was just released this year. And they haven't changed their fifteen year old recipe at all. Good thing. that means crappy sample sound goodness. Check this out. Four sample pads. Total sampling time of 2.6 seconds. Holy sh*t man. You can get the 4 pads to cycle around when you hit the keys. PS. it actually looks really cool thoguh. Kinda the thing you would want to use on your way home from work or while DJing.
