sampling doesn't get any easier, and rarely does it get more fun. if you can't have fun with one of these, you definitely shouldn't be making electronic music (or, probably, any kind of music).
great for grabbing 1.5 seconds of sound and making melodies and basslines. all you need is some effects. or not. also the bass is solid - put it thru some decent speakers and you will be pleased.
just remember. it's a sampler. garbage in - garbage out. always use good sounds.
there's nothing worthier of 5 AA batteries.
I need to get mine back from my friend. I'm starting to miss it. a lot.

I still have this little keyboard and never had more enjoyment with any piece of "fun" technology. Worth its weight in gold regarding practical joke value.
Take it on a camping trip with your buddies... sample your human voiced "growl" around midnight; play back at an octave lower when everyone is just about asleep.
Instant bear aka Sasquatch! First to flee are the hunting dogs... followed by their owners.
Just fun.

So cool I can't put it down once I pick it up. Have owned this keyboard (Concertmate 500) since 1985/86, and recently picked it up again after letting it sit & gather dust for at least 5 years. Thanks to all reviewers here for the cool tips! If I were a musician and could deal with the lo-fi I'd use this keyboard heavily. Classically cheesy percussion sounds. I mean utterly classic Casio cheese.

How this sampler can be described as over-hyped beats me. They can be picked up for $30. If that was $3000 then there may be a case. For pure fun, it is the best deal in town. Lots of features, which are easy to use. A nice lo-fi sound. Good build quality. Cute, small and reliable. Cheap deals, or any deals for that matter, are becoming less common. Old Akais are unreliable...needed a new disk drive recently..and a sod to use. Amusingly, they lack many of the fun features of the SK range. Now, it would be stupid to suggest that an SK could, or should, ever take the place of a professional sampler. An Akai is a far superior unit. It's just that it's not only about usefulness. An SK , or VSS are great fun. Fantastic fun. Akai menus and disk loading isn't. Fun costs.
Now, back to hype, where are my 303 and Moog Rogue. I need to raise cash to buy a house!
