The Korg X5 is my first synth...and it's a great synth to get started on... I've messed around with many other synths and they were so complex at first I was nearly shocked. After using the X5 I've learned a great deal in creating different sounds and such... I think this board's greatest limitation is the lack of SFX chips...which really only comes into play when in multimode. It's hard to get the nice synth sounds you wanted when you switch into multi mode since oyu only get two effects which are shared between all sounds...this sucks But as far as sounds are concerned...it has a ton...I have about 20 banks in sysex format that allow me a variety of flavors...from pop..rock..ambiant...and dance...It can do it...to a point If you want some banks just e mail me...they are small...

Well I just got this thing and so far for the money I paid for it I cant complain really. I have other synths, better sythns, cheaper more expensive you name it Ive had it. The funny thing is Im not a keyboard player but I do sequence my own backing tracks for live performances. I play guitar, mandolin, and sing live to the tracks I create. I basically use the X-5 for its sounds so things like keyboard features and all arent as important to me as Im sure they would be to a key player. The thing that I like the best is the sounds (drum/bass) and the size. I should say however that the sounds that came with it had to modified to suit my tatse but that was an easy task. I didnt even get a manual for it as the one I got was a floor demo and the dummies lost the book to it. But I still managed to get in there and edit sounds. With some tinkering and some imagination you can get top notch sounds from it. Dont go by the factory sounds. It can do alot more than that.

This is obviously a great synth, especially considering the price. I'm a beginner on synths, but comparing to the synths i've heard so far i think the sounds on X5 (or X5D) do very well.
I haven't bought a synth yet and before i will i'd like to know if i should buy X5 or X5D? I mean is the difference considerable (and worth about $200)? I sure could use the 64-voice polyphony on X5D though... (please e-mail me if you have an opinion)

The X5D is a good keyboard. It was my first board so I'm very glad with it. But Korg should have put a little more into it, such as more sounds or a sequencer. But otherwise it's great, especially the strings and the organs. But the weird sounds kind of suck.

I am a software engineer and music is my hobby. I use the Korg-X5 often and I am very satisfied with it. If You want to make Your special sounds, the best way is to use computer running the Sound editor software, even this software could have been made much better. A little software problem is allso using the TO HOST interface under WIndows95. It needs a special, non standart sequence by the instalation.
