I used to carry TWO of these under my arms. Size is great for gigging, and quite reliable too. The sounds are okay for live use in a pop / rock situation. When the guitars / bass/ drums are blaring, the X5's organ / piano and synth sounds can rally match up well in terms of volume. Solo, however, the deficiencies are glaring. The pianos are too obviously fake, the stings sound dirty, and the basses don't have balls. Only the organ sounds have some sort of character, but then you still have to run them though a good leslie effect as the onboard rotary speaker is not too good. As an SMF player, it's okay. But personally I kinda vomit all over those GM, soundcanvassy sounds (why do they have to put a GM bank anyway ?). When I left the band and decided not to play live anymore, I sold both. I now have an Emu Proteus FX (which I re-bought), an MC-303, a CS1x and a U220.

I volunteer my time for little theater sound production. There have been times when I wanted a particular sound or effect and was able to use my X5D's programmable capabilities to create just what I wanted. Using Cubase to combine Midi with audio, I have been able to produce some background accompaniment that I am quite frankly, very proud of. I wouldn't trade my X5D for the world. My only complaint (which I currently chalk up to my naves level in Midi) is not being able to play back multi-track Midi recordings and get the numerous, beautiful, rich, Korg sounds (or ones I have programed) instead of the the standard Midi 128 sounds.

It's quite a good cheap synth - very light, suitable as strap-on keyboard!!! (i've tried to.. and it works out!!). I've noticed an approx. 12dB loss in changing from PROG to MULTI mode: even the output level is a bit low.. By the way, i love the flexibility and the spaciousness of some pads you can create: try out Xedit and tell!!

Music means a lot to me. I have Korg X5, Yamaha CS1x, Behringer Eurorack
MX 802, 133 Mhz PC running Cakewalk Pro Audio 6, Samson S12 (mike),
AWE-32 and lots of weird stuff (like homebuild soundgenerator) in my ho-
mestudio. I've almost reached the recording deal (I'm really close now).
I like the X5, because it's the first synth I got. Because I didn't have any
other soundsources two years ago. I soon found out how to play around
with it.
X5 gots really nice organ sounds, and marcato-strings are quite good.
It doesn't have analoque-type of sounds, but it has nice sounds any-
way (I just love those organs). It's a good synth for cheesy house-organs.
You can even make squeal like a pig, if you start to play around with the
distortion-effect (I've done 303-sounds with it).
If you want a versatile and flexible synth, but you don't have much money,
buy X5.
