No this EA-1 is not a budget MS-10/20.
But it is one very good 2 channel mono synth. The sounds tend to be mid range for the most part, you can get a low end out of this machine but it will take a little work. The highend is excellent this little box screams, if in a litte more tame digital sqwuak. For interesting effects run a digital drum machine through the filter, I used a roland tr-707, and to be honest I was quite happy with the results sounded aphex twin like, good staring spot, especially since the flanger and delay are both midi tempo sensitive, so no ungainly wacky effects that put your beat out of time, everything is tempo synced and it really makes a big difference in timing, the timing on this box is dead on. I'm sure the resolution is only 96 ticks per QN, but it seems to have very accurate timing regardless of the 96 tpqn resolution.
Good box, good price, I'll use it live for fillins and general leads etc, Hype works for and against this box, disregard all of it -- if you're looking for a decent 303 emulation, or just a quick sketch pad for ideas and leads this box is it.

I use the EA-1 to drive the Virus a marriage made in heaven. For composers that hit that " brick wall" the EA-1 is the answer. Easy to program and the sound pallet is infinate you simply cannot run out of ideas with this box. And the price blew me away it sounds like it should have been 3 times the amount. Korg really did some deep reasearch when developing the EA-1. Looks like I MUST check out the ER-1 if it is a bit like the ER-1 WOW.....

I love this machine, I much prefer it to the ER-1 (although it's realy nice to program, it's sounds aren't that great for someone into producing big beat abd break beat stuff). This unit is so nice to program, if you control it with a device that has some good Arps on it (Mc-505 has one of the best arpeggiator sets I've seen) then you can really have fun.
It doesn;t replicate the 303 that exactly..but as has been stated I think that's a great thing. Just because it allows the EA-1 to have it's own feel. I also own a FutureRetro 777 which emulates a 303 in every possible way. I don't think you can compare the two......they work really great together.
RE: Getting the Input to work...a lot of people (me included) misunderstand this function at the beginning. You can't hit the "Audio In' and effect the sound...that will just relay the 'line input' in it's orignal form, handy for saving space on a mixer. What you need to do is swith odd Audio In, select where you want the Audio In to play via the notes, then select Audio In for Osc 1. Now when you change the filters you'll effect the input signal. You can do some really interesting stuff with this.

Just bought one, and I'm very impressed - it's too easy to say 'hardware Rebirth' to this and the ER-1, but this thing adds that classic Korg analogue wierdness into the equation - I'd swear it acts like a 20 year old Korg monosynth, even down to losing sounds entirely if you turn the wrong knob too far. My only complaint is that there's way too much bleed between the channels - zeroing one input leaves the other way too audible, so it's no use as two units in a box without some heavy gating.

This machine is amazing. I got it reluctantly, worried that I might be making a mistake. I was kind of expecting a 303 clone without any bangs and whistles, but it surprised me. It does so much that I wanted and more! It was easy to get your original cool stuff to come out of it, but every time I think I've got the whole thing down I discover some new way to make a whole different sound. It's worth it. . .the best at it's price range and even double it's price!
