The ER-1 is nowhere near a 909. The kick is not as "pure", the cymbals are way too clean sounding. And who cares? It's a great box for making screwed up beats - perfect for electro, drum and bass, and as filler for other genres. It has a good groove to it, and comes with several presets showing off the unique sounds it can create. The ring mod is nice for external processing, too. The verb is cheap-sounding but in a good way - reminds me of my Radio Shack verb (except this verb I doubt I'll be able to blow up as easily (: ).
For the price, I think its a must. I know some will look at this and think "groove approved, must be crap"... but this is the first insta-techno box that I think has big potential elsewhere... OTOH if you think "909", you will be disappointed, IMHO...

Great sounds. Anywhere from 808/909ish sounds to almost real drum sounds. Just for the sounds and ease of programming alone I would give it a 5/5. But today I bought a MIDI cord and hooked my ER-1 up to my Alesis D4 and all I can say is WOW. Unlimited possibilities. Now I use the built in sequencer on the ER to play the fat sounds out of the D4. Fun.

This box is the shit! I paid $1000 for a Quasimidi 309 (has 5 parts instead of the ER-1's 11) and the ER-1 can pretty much blow away the QM309 for less than half the price.

In a word...fun. It sounds great and is exactly the inspirational piece I've been looking for. It's a poorman's 303, capable of some pretty convincing cracking, snarling basslines. I haven't gotten into it's ability to gate an external audio source, but that is a stroke of genius. Now I don't have to shell out more cash for a dedicated noise gate. Incidentally, Sam Ashe will let them go for $350, and for that price, it's the best deal going. I've heard people knock it, passing it off as a toy, I guess because of it's plastic housing and knobs, but I also seem to remember people saying the same thing about the infamous TB-303 when it came out. L8R's!

It makes some really cool noises - instant Mouse on Mars drum lines.
Although the knobs don't transmit over MIDI, you can record one knob twiddle per voice per pattern in either smooth or trigger mode (exactly as you play it or kind of quantized) - shame you can't twiddle two or more, but you can't have everything... Of course, once you start twiddling on the fly you can control what the hell you want no problem. You can also record a separate 'motion sequence' for delay depth and time (both knobs OK this time), to get some more wacky fx.
The bass boost sounds OK, but it's a bit of an all-or-nothing affair. It seems to do very little until you've turned it up almost all the way, then it suddenly kicks in at like full power... could have been implemented a little better, I think.
In my week of using it less than I'd have liked that's all I've found to complain about.
Nice machine!
