A great concept. Very good execution of that concept. The overall character of this machine is generally that of a very clean version of an analog machine, similar to the way a Nord lead or the JP-8000 emulate their true analog predecessors. But the ER-1 has some punch. Although I agree with the comments about the "plasticity" of the sounds- especially in headphones, it really depends on the environment. In a mix, or through big speakers, the sound seems more pro, especially with the addition of the right EQ, compression and/or effects. A great concept. Very good execution of that concept. But the ER-1 has some punch. Although I agree with the comments about the "plasticity" of the sounds, it depends on the environment. In a mix, or through big speakers, the sound seems more pro, especially after the right EQ, compression and/or FX. (This is often the case with certain simple "cheesy" sounds. They fit well into the mix better than a great big complex sound.) In addition, the malleability of the sounds makes it possible to create sounds at the edge of the "drum machine" realm: blips, fx, and even synth basses. It is also fun to sequence 808 style, while you have the option of up to 64 notes per pattern. My only major complaint with the box is the lack of additional outputs. In the past a lot of synths didn't have them but it's just silly now, even my SR-16 has 4 outs. Overall, it's a fun, user-friendly, flexible and highly useful box; I've already used in on several tracks including a commercial one, and digitally sampled drums wouldn't have sounded quite as good as the ER-1's analog modeling. *Here is a tip: if you find the snares weak, especially for harder industrial or techno tracks, layer! Layer the snare you make with a second one, use the low boost, and layer a pitched (way) down open hat or crash cymbal underneath to add a more metallic character. You will find an example of this on some of Korg's presets. The ER-1 is capable of a surprising array of sounds.

Good drum machine...Not great, but I find it very useful...Flexible tweaking of sounds...Easy to program...2 audio inputs are nice...Its construction scares me...Well worth the money.

Hey!
I bougth a korg er1 about two months and i just got the ea1 because i was pleased whit the er1. Ok the sound is not as "warm" as other "real analogue" drum machine but this machine can produce some interesting sounds. I bougth it because i was tired of always sampling and mapping drum sounds in the sampler (this can take 45 minutes before even getting the first beat pattern laid-on) So the ER1 lets me produce a beat in less than 30 secs and i can tweak the sounds to my liking witch is great. Ok i admit the results sounds a little "plastic" but i dont mind, i can transmit the pattern via midi so i can replace one of the sounds or all of the sounds contained in the machine easily.
This machine is for beginers and professionals. Because the beginners will have fun with it and the professionals will love to process the sounds in various ways to get banging results.
As for the Ea1 i got it because i needed "kitch" sounding trance/techno sounds... like distorted 303 type of sounds and at first glance it also seem nice for high pitched echo synth sounds and big trance bass. I also have the jp8000 and the ea1 is a good companion for it because the jp8000 is very good creating outstanding synth leads and pads but is kinda weak creating bass sounds that bangs. It is also useless for 303 distorted type of sounds (i mean why would you pay 2000$ for a kick as synth and use only 1 of its 4 oscilattor, and drive it trough a distortion pedal.) in my opinion you better get on of those inexpensive ea1 wich already comes whit distortion hehe
Anyone who only have 1200$ and wants a drum machine a synth and a sampler. i would highly recomend the electribe series (FAR MORE CREATIVE THAN THOSE mc303, mc505. and it also gets you more involved not only in the song creation process but also the synthesis of the sounds used in "electronic" music. (In other words, great machines for beginners to learn and jam and also interesting machines for professionals who needs complementary sounds to their setup and dont have unlimited budget...
Try them before you buy them. But i am happy with my purchase... the only bad thing is you probably need and effect box for the ER1 and one for the EA1.... a good external filter would also help the ER1 sound more "professional"
Just a little trick, if you want to send the sounds on 2 differents outputs... pan them... kicks and toms on the right for example and hihats cymbals and claps on the left... then EQ them in your mixer and pan them back were they belong...

What machine 'kills' this? The tr-808/909 are good, but in comparison, they don't make this box look bad at all. Grab 1 up now (maybe 2) cuz if you don't, you'll be like some of these TR-x0x collectors paying $1000 bux for it 20 years down the road. This is without a doubt the 808/909 of the y2k! Really good sounds (which have their own character) and easy to program. Tried one of the newer dr-770's out there? Not impressed either? Get one of these. I'll have mine real soon!

The ER-1 rocks. But to get the true power out of it you MUST understand analogue synth theory and you must know how to post process the output. The real time control makes it possible to create sounds other drum machines can only dream of. The beauty of it is you can dial in the sounds tha best suit your mix. You don't get that kind of flexibility with a sample playback box. But, if you are not interested in analogue style sounds get something else.
