Well, my cohort has both the ER1 and the EA1 and he really likes them. And, I have to say I like the ER1 myself, but I do have some issues with the ER1.
The kicks I love, they can be deep and smoothe and pour over a mix quite nicely, they have tons of possibilities and sound as good if not better than an 808. But the snares and the brass are waaaaay to tinny and metallic. Which can be a good thing at times of course but, Fucking A! I can't stand the sound at all.
And they sound NOTHING like a 909. Just a really bad sample. I do beileve that there are discrepencies from machine to machine, and I have heard some people get pretty good cymbal sounds out em'. It can be used to great effect.
But those snares.......no man, no.

This is a great box if you want interesting sounds of your own, and a bad box if you looove making the same boring-ass rhythms with the same boring Roland sounds as all your boring "contemporaries" and "influences" ("Wow, what an insistent kick drum sound...ooh look they're filtering everything! And here comes a long drum roll! I didn't see any of that coming!")
I've made complete tracks with this machine and nothing else, and used it w/all manner of instruments and types of songs. I don't know nuthin' bout synthesis, I just turn the knobs till I get sounds I like that go together well..The um, PCM is it sounds on it are kind of dull but if you clip them and re- (de?) tune them you get sounds that are pleasing to the ear and go well with the ones you made from the imitation analog stuff.
Gating other stuff through it is endlessly fascinating and I don't even smoke pot. And syncing it to other instruments adds a new dimension to them.
So buy one if you like to make your own, interesting, usable sounds. And buy Roland stuff instead if you are an utter conformist who is utterly conservative about what sounds can go together in the supposedly nonconformist dance music genre.

Am I the only one who is using the ER-1's great step sequencer interface to trigger my sampler (instead of Cubase) in addition to triggering the internal sounds (which can be fucking excellent)???? With a bit of fine tuning, you can even get the knobs to affect parameters on the sampler. This is the most innovative new drum machine that I've seen in ages and there's nothing that can touch it in it's price range.

Personally, I'm eventually going to get an RM1x, but I got my Electribe for $300 and I couldn't be happier. Anyone who's going to give this unit a 1/5 is a fool. There is no other unit that is this simple to use that has so many options. If you want to sample beats.. buy a sampler, just don't knock on this unit, especially when you can get one so cheaply.

Simple as can be and thats the beauty of it. Nice litte step-sequencer which I hook up to other drum-modules to program. Works real nice I hate programing drums on the computer. Anyway I like the sound of it too. Very nice kicks and weird percussion sounds. Fun little machine.
