The ER-1 is truly one badass synth/drum machine. It can make the most whacked out sounds or some throbing, pumping, bumbing bass drums. Most sounds are easily created except I cant seem to program 909ish snares very well (if any one knows a patch lemme know!!). The sequencing is great, just like my old-school roland toys that I treasure so much. The only negative thing I could think of would be making a proper snare drum. And the lack of a filter. However you can achieve some tight odd sounding snares by layering some detuned pcm sounds your own modeled tones. Really just an amazing beatbox. Not shite like the MC303 (had one and sold it). Ever since the fatefull day I found a 909 for $25 dollars at the flea market have I known what a good beatbox is. This machine is a *very* good beatbox. Unbeatable. Buy one used for cheap and I promise you you wont be sorry.

I bought one of these a few months ago, after having been absolutely mesmerized by my friends'. It's a remarkable "instant gratification" piece of equipment, and sitting down with it, I'd really write some choice patterns. But eventually I'd plug it into my PC and record the output, and it always ended up sounding a bit cheesy and thin.
The bass sound is actually quite wonderful, but everything else has a distinctly weak, treble sound that I couldn't shake. It stood out in a mix, at least to my ears.
Ah well, I have since sold it and ordered a Novation Drumstation. It's certainly not as innovative as the ER1, but when push comes to shove, it's hard to argue with a 909.

I bought mine s/h for $US 270.-. The plastic-case, rubberknobs and buttons look cheap, feel cheap, but... the sound is incredible! If you want straight pure 808/909 sound, get a Novation Drumstation or get the overpriced originals. But if you want something with "Fettklangdruck" for a small price get ER-1. The Airbase has still some more pressure, but also costs twice the price of an Electribe. When it comes to sound the ER-1 is inbetween Novation and Jomox. You can tweak some really weird stuff out of the little cheap box but also get punching 909 kicks. IMO it�s less a 808/909 clone than much more a drumsynthesizer with a nice step-sequencer. What i miss are filters, but who cares. I am getting a Sherman Filterbank anyways. And for *that* price, i would always choose it over Drumstation or Airbase. If you can live with the cheap plastic design and without filter, and you want an original drummachine... Go and get it, you can�t go wrong.

The ER-1 is well worth its $400 pricetag. It couples SIMPLE navigation with some awesome sounds. I think the Ring Mod feature is useless, though. It would be nice to have a user-assignable set of effects on those buttons. Also it would be nice tro have some kind of sound reset button for each part - occasionally a part that's been played with too much just doesn't produce any sound, or a 'blip' sound at best. For the price, the ER-1 definitely outshines its shorcomings. It's WELL worth the money because of the easy-to-use sequencer, the great realtime knobs for tweakaholics like me, and a good bank of preset sounds to boot.

Can't imagine a better machine at anything close to the price, very intuitive interface,sounds incredible,easy to tweak and make great sounds with,so simple to use I've yet to open the manual, has a few limitations but nothing terribly hard to work around and certainly still and incredible machine for the $350 or so they cost, Have had mine a week and find it to be amazingly easy and powerful took to use, its not a 909/808, but it can do many similar things and much more, for a lot less, worth checking out for anyone looking for an electronic/dance music geared rythym box
