One hell of an under-rated synth. One of the most complete analog machines you can find on the market for such an attractive price. Easy to purchase and repair if needed. The Polysix isn't really complex and will teach you the basics of analod modeling. Patch storage is a blessing, and the arpeggiator (sp?) is wonderful. You can play with this synth for days and get many different sounds. Only drawbacks are the key contacts and the leaking battery, tune seems to be decent. Requires a little care, but come on.. it isn't a Nord dudes... (hint of sarcasm)

I bought my 1st PolySix in 1982...and fell in luv with it...(we were married the following year) ;)~ It was polyphonic...programmable sounds...and... Has sounds that amaze... The strings are excellent...and with tweaking warm humane voices appear... We called it our poorman's Mellotron... Lot's of knobs give great, quick control of sound... The Unison setting provides bass notes that really "QUAKE".... Stack notes ...nice appeggiator...special effects....nice lead.... Has no MIDI....I must buy a midi retro-fit kit... Bought a second used PolySix in 1996 just because I Luv them so much...( I need to get out more ) ;)~ because it has no midi..I can't give it a rating of 5... but it's one of my favs... it gets a 4 the Dr

I unfairly slagged this as being overrated in a thread a while back in the GS, so I'm making amends. I gave the Poly a proper run-through and after 20 minutes, bought it on the spot. $250 in excellent condition. I had the battery replaced immediately and have been in analog bliss ever since. I've had it less than a week and have re-programmed all the sounds that came with it.
It's so easy to come up with interesting sounds on it that I'm re-programming all the time now. Yes, you can get the nasty, ballsy unison-mode basses and leads, but I mainly use it for haunting atmospheres, pads, and textures. I love arpeggiating a mellow sound w/ a quick attack and long release and just drifting away. The self oscillation adds a nice effect. The Juno-60 might be a little smoother on the pads, but I still find plenty of warmth and richness in the Poly, especially considering most of the sounds I program consist of just 1 VCO and no sub. The Poly definitely has it's own character and really stands out amongst my other synths (hybrid, PD, VA, FM, ROMpler) and even blends well w/ my JP-8.
This is a great synth to learn the basics of analog synthesis on and is solidly built. The knobs are very sturdy and responsive as well. It has that look that just screams early 80's and is great for new wave, rock, synthpop, and ambient. I've encountered no tuning issues or keyboard failures, either. I'll be confidently gigging the Poly w/ my band w/o thinking twice. I'll give it a 5 as I feel it's an absolute bargain price-wise and has inspired me not only in terms of writing, but getting back to my roots of programming sounds. Not just programming the Poly, but my other synths as well. An inspirational synth--what more could you ask for? I simply love it.

I am using a Polysix that i borrowed from school. Is good at making bassy sounds. this synth is fun to mess around with. it has a pretty good interface. no midi. the main problem that i run in to is the keyboard contacts caroding. the conductor on the rubber contact cups gets dirty and inhibits use. other then that a nice synth

I have developed an unhealthy relationship with this synth. I am SO into it! It makes my Prophet 600 crawl into a corner with it's tail between it's voice chips... The amount of sound you can get out of this synth is incredible. If you are thinking about a Juno, or a Prophet 600 this would be a nice alternative. CHANGE THE BATTERY! I changed the battery, replaced the cpu, and cleaned up the circuit board, and suddenly all the strange quirks went away. By the way, a Radioshack cordless phone battery usually does the trick, but for safety's sake I mounted mine near the power supply to prevent damaging any boards in the future! I plan to be buried with this one!
