my 2 cents -
my first real keyboard was the korg X3 - i will always have a place in my heart for it. it was the brain of the rig, i used the sequencer for everything and it controled all other modules. however, its getting really old, the disk drive is dying (slowly, but still dying) and i need something reliable for shows, so ive made the switch to n364.
as said previously, n364 is just a souped up x3 with 2 extra sound banks in both combi and program,2 extra outs, and an arpegiator. 2 extra banks are nice, very nice, 2 extra outs are very, very nice, arp is a large pile of poo.
i really dont undestand how anyone could think of this sequencer as "hard" or "useless". of all the workstations ive tried, korg makes the abolute best and most user friendly - you want a nightmare? try that Xp60 bullshit.
as stated, i use this board for all the sequences and 80 percent of the sounds. how does it sound? pretty damn good, imo. ive never understood why people had a problem with the pianos. they sound fine for me. if i want it to sound like a grand piano stuck far up in the vaticans arse, well, i guess i'll have to stick one up there wont i? and the n364 isnt nearly as heavy or stinky. put some reverb on it. excellent. synth tones are fab as well, i especially like the "synth bass 3" program which sounds like by buddys T3. one of my favourite patches, hands down, i almost bought a T3 cause that sound was missing on the X3 and as i was told i couldnt get it. well, here it is. i dig the strings, the dont cut as much as they could, but they do when i need them to. if the sounds get old, i hook up another midi board. bam.
drums are useful. i however, do not use them, opting instead for an R5/R8 combo, controlled via midi by the sequencer. let me add that midi implementation is great as well. extremely easy to learn.
anyhow - the point of all this is - it doesnt sound like a nord, a virus, or a Q, but if thats the sound you want, buy one of those. i like the korgs cause they do what they do, and its simple to do it with them. they sound good. thats what matters.
cheers.
