Darren Gish a hobbyist user from USA writes:
I bought my Matrix 1000 for us$275 when I was in college, and it is one of the best purchases I've ever made. This synth has 1000 sounds, ranging from extremely good to extremely strange to extremely bad, but overall, they're mostly good.

The Matrix 1000 is good for layering with other synths-I also have a Yamaha V50 (FM synth), and the two sound very good together.

There are several patches in the M1000 that have interesting effects. One, for example (I don't remember which #-turns from a pad to a Hammond-style organ when you use a sustain pedal. Another becomes more nasal-sounding when you move the mod wheel up.

I would recommend getting an editor for it-there are several shareware/freeware editors available on the web.

I play & compose electronic music since 1981 with a lot of different synthesizers, but OB Matrix 1000 the BEST synth I ever met. So fat, so expressive sound! Great 4 russian folk music! OB sounds like expensive russian BAYAN:)

George Salazar a professional user from US writes:
I have been using this unit for almost 10 years now. I do mostly Goa/Psy Trance now. Lately I just use it for bass, sticking to the 700 bank for sounds. I used to have an Opcode editor for the mac, but i really hate software editors. I was hoping to get a Wave Idea Bitstream to edit M1000 and my Micro Q, but they do not distribute them in the US and it is a bit to pricey for my needs(about$450). Peavey makes a Midi Editor(PC1600), but there are no dials.

I may go back to a mac editor, maybe Unisyn to make sounds.

If you want real Analog sounds... I recommend this unit.
