The Matrix1000 always comes in with a lot of character; it adds warmth, spice and also some unique 'edge' to your mix. After all, it's just a matter of taste, anyway. Great things about it are the modulation matrix (great if you're into editing) and especially how it responds to expression (like Breath Control). Mine is a bit noisy, though. But it sounds awesome! Never sell it - you'll regret it.

You'd better know it's somehow awkward how it reacts to humans - but that's what's good about it indeed. I'd say it's not a "bread an butter" typical analog. While it can be fat and everything, it has some sort of amazing ability to do outlandish and lively/evolving textures with scary dark things happening underground. Remember a lot of sounds are programmed to react to key pressure and the like : USE the controllers or you'll miss half of the machine !! Since our hear is so used to processed sound in modern synths, it will sound very dry to most people. But plug in an FX box (need I advertise any ?) and you'll get alien sound unthinkable on a tyical mainstream digital synth of today. Well if you survive the modulation routing complexity you'll find out what hidden goods lie behind the severe 1u front panel. I don't know how obvious it is -or not- to non-musicians but a very typical trademark of the Matrix to my ears is the sheer beauty and liveliness of the high frequencies. Like it fills nicely the spectrum where very few other synth could go with grace. Well, maybe all that discussion is a bit abstract, but nevertheless... So to sum up : it's atypical, capricious, surprising (but certainly not unreliable), irritating at times, breathtaking at others, well, it's kind of a woman, really.

I just got the unit and without even looking at the manula I was able to start using it right away. It has deep sweeping analog sounds. Unless you are going to spend a lot of money, you can't beat it.

I love the Obie Matrix 1000. I bought it second- hand, but I'll never sell it. This is good analog stuff for only a few bucks. Way better than a juno 106. Fat basses, swirling pads, filter sweeps that will damage your speakers AND your ears,very warm analog pads and beautiful strings. Ok, most of the presets suck, but out of 1000 sounds, at least a 100 are great! It's very easy to handle, and the thing is built like a tank. The manual is straightforward and clear. A little arrogant though, I quote: "If it doesn't sound right, you are probably playing it wrong" ! Yeah right! I use it live together with a Korg X5DR. Together, they are a great team. The Obie is great for rock lead solo's and van Halen-like powerchords. The output is high and noise-free. Some patches are a bit to brassy and lack effects. But put this baby in 'nuclear' Unison mode and on a fat bass preset and you are in a analog heaven! This is the funky shit baby, go buy it!

I love the Matrix 1000--have two of the old blackface ones. It's a good box for soundtrack work, esp. getting sounds that are convincingly lush by themselves but also work under dialog. One of mine was an early review model from Electronic Musician magazine when I worked there in 1989--it still works great 11 years later, though the other one (a year or so younger) occasionally fails to recognize the MIDI IN connection unless I unplug and replug the cable. Took a while to troubleshoot that one! :^)
