I had the Matrix for 2 weeks and then sold it. It was too bright and brassy for my taste. It's a good value, though. This module screams 80's and there's definitely nothing wrong with that. I simply preferred a Korg DW8000 I just bought. I bought it originally for $275. If you want a taste of the "Oberheim sound" w/o spending alot of $$, then you'll defintely want to give it a shot.

Ok it's not a matrix 12 nor is it an OBMX or anything by oberheim with true VCO's

With that said though, it's a wonderful textural synth probably the most smooth and ambient synth I own and I own nearly a dozen other synths, great for spacey pads, and noise washes, strings are a perfect early new order sound ie. that smooth as butter string sound is well beautiful. Basses are ok, I wish I had a controller device that would give me realtime control over the 1k, but alas I don't yet so I do all my editting via my PC, which is kind of a pain but the overall quality of the matrix sound makes it all worth while.

I love this synth to death, even though I probably use other synths more in my rack I simply cannot find another synth with the "Soul" of the matrix. Kudos to the other poster who mentioned "Oberheim Soul" as it's quite true, they don't sound like anything else made they sound similiar in some cases but have a timbre all of their own, everyones rack deserves either a matrx6/1k they're just that good. Plus they can be had for under $300 now, so skip buying those korg EA/ER's and get a matrix you'll probably thank me for it.

Greenie a hobbyist user from USA writes:
Wowwwww...one of my favorite synths...superb for ambient...glowing pads, complex textures, gorgeous bell and piano-like sounds, and plenty of strange noises. It's really quite amazing that such a sophisticated synth can be had so cheaply. Of course, you won't be able to program it without the right hardware or software.

It has a wonderfully mellow sound, and while many of the presets are vanilla, bread-and-butter analog patches, there's plenty of 'whoaaa maaan!!' in there too.

The people I bought mine from had two; I wish I'd gotten the other one also.

Well, since i will probably never own enough money to own an Xpander or M12, i'll have to settle for this. the M6's and M1000s are great pieces of gear...and true, this should be part of every rig..some of the best swirly pads ive ever heard...said best by adam brinkman, this one has something lots of current synths lack - SOUL!!

Someday everybody will wake up and go back to the synths with SOUL. The Obie has soul. Awesome piece that belongs in every rig. Anybody stacked 6 of 'em together yet?
