This is the first real analog synth I have had since the 80's, and I am very impressed. Without recovering the rest of these reviews -- it's a preset only version of the Matrix 6-6R. All editing must be done from a computer or midi controller (eg Kenton Control Freak).
The presets are awesome! Everything from ripping basses, to mellow, slow evolving pads; percussive leads, very distinctive electric pianos, and tons of sound effects that you can only get from a synth with extensive modulation routings.
The presets are also very expressive, with extensive use of aftertouch (usually controls filter cutoff), velocity and key realease. Go beyond the presets and you can get just about any sound out of this thing that it is possible to get with subtractive analog synthesis. There is just simply much more sonic pallete here than anything short of a modular. The envelopes and lfos go from veryfast to e x t r e m e l y s l o w, and the modulation sources and destinations are truly extensive.
It seems like every synth review ends up comparing synths of this era with the Juno 106, which is only valid because the 106 is so well known (and found in so many big name kit lists). While the two synths CAN cover some of the same territory, they're really more complimentary than comparable. The Matrix series are bigger and warmer sounding (twice as many oscillators), while the Rolands cut through a mix with brilliant clarity.
At the prices these go for you can't go wrong. So much sonic ability, so little $$. Try one BEFORE you buy a virtual analog!

I am reading a lot about software editors here. For those who don�t know: There exists a Matrix 1000 (+6 and 6R) (hardware) programmer, manufactured by ACCESS MIDI TOOLS, Fulda, Germany. I bought one two years ago and it is nice screwing the knobs.

I decided to put together some songs for my recently released CD ("Mileage"), and I heard the way I used the Matrix 1000 I owned 7-8 years ago, in one of my older songs. I have been trying to duplicate that sound so many different ways, and I can't do it.
I broke down this week, and decided to buy another one (never to sell it again). It has a quality to it, that I think should satisfy most analog hungry folks out there. I would buy two, but I have a way of processing it which suits my fancy. It is great for any of your analog needs. One song on my CD called "Fresh Air Serenade", uses a very subtle whistling tone in the lead sound, generated with the Matrix-1000. I haven't owned ANYTHING since, which can modulate that kind of tone so expressively.

I had my Matrix 1000 for some time, I think I had one dramatic bass patch I used to layer, before I really got the point........and this is it Don't use it as another boring box of presets. Logic users. Download a Matrix Environment and twiddle in real time Absolutely no experience neccessary. No more static, predictable sample playback. You can introduce a truly chaotic random element into your music. Of course if you want to be anal you can record/sequence the best bits and pretend that you knew what you were doing all along........... So if you want to know what electrons sound like banging into each other get close to the quantum get your arpeggiator running and tweak You'll thank me.

I finally started to explore my Matrix through Opcode's Galaxy Editor, on the Mac.
I don't think it's available for PC, but it's worth a try...www.opcode.com...This synth
is incredibly flexible, once you get to know the subtleties...even without the matrix
modulation, basic features are wonderfully sophisticated...2 LFO's and 3 envelopes
per voice, with numerous triggering capabilities...LFO's can be started anywhere in
the cycle, ramped in without using up an envelope, lagged, etc...the envelopes are DADSR
with "CV" input to each stage for modulation...3 types of osc sync...noise as well as
PWM and various waveshapes...polyphonic portamento, non-linear tracking of most parameters,
...the list goes on...and yes, multiple M1000's are stackable, with MIDI overflow...
all in all, a remarkable machine!
