Does anyone know whether the m-1000 or m-6r sound better? I read that the m-1000 uses a 'synth in a chip' from curtis that includes the vco,a,f where the m-6r uses seperate vco, vcf,a chips. If you could post the answer next, that would help us prospective matrix buyers. thanks!

matrix 999 a part-time user from Holland writes:
The matrix 1000 didn't do it for me. I switched from software to hardware synths because hardware sounds more inspiring. My other synths do, they invite me to play, but not the matrix 1000. I found it lacks the "magic" in its sound that other anlogues have. Perhaps if you layer it or use lots of effects, as previous reviewers suggest, it becomes usable. I guess I'm lazy and want my synths to sound well on their own.

It's not that it has DCO's. I have a Roland MKS-7 - a Juno 106 in a box - which does inspire me.

I bought it (the older black version) for 225 euro and gave it a chance for half a year. After a while I never turned it on anymore and I recently sold it, also for 225. Didn't even use it on one single track.

But, as we say in Holland: everyone has his own taste, so who knows... you may like the matrix.

L A Lawrenson a part-time user from UK writes:
Hi, I bought my Matrix 1000 about 2 years ago for £150, and I use it mainly for pads and basses. Usually, I layer the sounds with something else, and use the analogue to fatten out the sound, or add some fizz at the bottom end. I use mine with a Kenton Control Freak Studio. There's a lot going on inside the module, and by tweaking some of the parameters you can get create an unplayble mess, but by careful selective editing I can really make this baby sing. One of the basses I've created rattles the windows! Don't know about you, but that's all I've ever asked from a bass!

For the money that these are going for at the moment they're are great value. To my ears it sounds best through and above mid range; I particularly like the pads drones and efx sounds.

However, I'm not convinced by its basses, there's a certain fuzziness and lack of definition in the bottom end, and the EG's aren't very snappy which causes a lack of punchiness. Also the oscillators are digitally controlled and the filters are CEM IC's (rather than discrete components) both of which lead to a thin scratchy sound, that is atleast when compared with more expensive analogues (I also have a Waldorf Pulse and a Mark II Odyssey; for bass and punch I go for the Pulse, for dirt and grease, the Ody).

It does, though produce a nice buttery lively analogue sound that a Virus or Nord costing ten times as much simply can't (I used to have a Virus but I've got better now). If you get a sysex editor you can programme your own patches and apparently the voice structure in terms of modulation and routing is very powerful. I'm happy just scrolling through the 1000 presets until I find something I like.

Judged soley within the realm of analogue synths I'd give it 3 out of 5 for sound quality. On value for money its got to be 5 out of 5. What a bobby dazzler, cheap as chips!

Jan Leslie Holmes a professional user from Bronx writes:
I have 2 of these synths and I had them for years.I find that for pad sounds or sound efx or basses,it has a unique sound.nothing I have sounds quite like it. Although I have a triton rack super jv and other gear I woudld not sell these units. for editing I use J.L.Cooper fadermaster which came with presets to control this as well as many others from diffrent brands. You can link them together for the fattest synth in your house.I would not sell them.I hope this review helps.
